Before starting a project

The City of San Antonio Office of Historic Preservation requires that any plans for repairs/maintenance or other work to the exterior of properties in historic districts be presented to the Historic Design Review Commission for review and approval. The Architectural Review Committee (ARC) of the Monte Vista Historical Association is dedicated to assisting the residents of Monte Vista through this process. Residing within an historic district is a privilege and responsibility, and the ARC helps our neighbors preserve the uniqueness and integrity of Monte Vista Historic District. We work closely with the HDRC in maintaining historic preservation guidelines.("ARC").

The Office of Historic Preservation has prepared a form to help residents determine whether their projects will require either a Repair and Maintenance Application or a HDRC Application (click here to view or download the form).

The first step in the planning and review process is to present the drafted proposal to the ARC, which meets the first Monday of each month at 6:30 p.m. in the Landa Library annex. If the first Monday of the month falls on a holiday the meeting will be held the following Monday at 6:30 pm.

     •   Materials to submit to the ARC for review are the same as those required
          by the HDRC and are listed in the HDRC Application Process
          brochure (click here to view or download).

     •   Submitting the appropriate application and materials to ARC will expedite
          the review process:
          –  Repair and Maintenance Application
          –  HDRC Application

The ARC will help determine if the proposed plan is within the accepted guidelines for the Monte Vista neighborhood and offer appropriate advice. The ARC can also provide direction in the HDRC review and approval process.

Following recommendation by the ARC, property owners must submit the appropriate application to the HDRC for their review and approval. The HDRC meets on the first and third Wednesday of each month; their application submittal deadline and meeting schedule may be found at this link. Working together, the ARC and Monte Vista property owners can easily and successfully accomplish the HDRC review and approval process, resulting in positive determinations and the preservation of our historic neighborhood.
