Fire at the historic Winchester Kelso House

Fire at the historic Winchester Kelso House

October 26, 2014

Fire broke out in the historic Winchester Kelso House, at 107 West Craig Place, on the night of Sunday, October 26. The blaze was reported at 10:43 PM by neighbors, Gregg and Kelly Alba, who own The Inn at Craig Place next door. Firefighters arrived at the scene three minutes later, and the fire was quickly contained. Firefighters left the scene at 1:19 AM.

Thanks to Gregg and Kelly Alba, and the quick response of our neighborhood firefighters, an important historic house was saved, with only limited fire damage at the east porch. The Kelso House was designed by Atlee Ayres, architect, in 1906, for the distinguished jurist Winchester Kelso. It has been the subject of great concern within the Monte Vista Historic District for the past several years due to its sadly deteriorating condition.
